The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
