No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
