Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
