The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
